Description
The chapel is hidden in a park with high hedges and cypresses. It is located two kilometers south-east of the village of Seillans, among fields of olive trees. It was built in the 12th century. A wooden church from the 8th century that burned down in 1156 previously stood here. The hall in front of it is probably much younger. The building has been thoroughly renovated and the surrounding park is well maintained.
Inside there are many sights, but these can only be seen on guided tours. There isn't even a small hole to look inside. The inventory includes, for example, a Roman base, remains of a pre-Christian chancel, choir stalls from the 17th century, votive tablets and a baroque altar from the 16th century. This shows a biblical story but also political scenes. Frescoes by Emmanuel Bellini date from 1956.
Ormaux means elm. Apparently, climate change no longer allows this tree species to survive in this plain.
