This is in the north of the city centre (map). 300 different booths are to be found on this market. The product range includes fruit and vegetables, direct marketing food, cheese, oarganic products, fish and seafood, meat products, meat products, flowers and crop and also clothes, kitchen utensils, furniture, toys and not non alimentary producs.
Apt's weekly market has been held every Saturday in the city since the early 16th century. It is one of the oldest and most visited markets in Provence. The texts in the Apt archives tell of a weekly market first held in the 12th century and later confirmed by royal decrees: first by King René in 1470, granting the city the right to hold the market every Tuesday, then in 1523 when René of Savoy, also Count of Tende and Governor of Provence, postponed the market from Tuesday to Saturday morning.
It takes place all year round and attracts marketer and customers from all over the Luberon and the Plateau d'Albion. In the high season, more than 350 market vendors come and fill the whole city center from 8am to 12.30pm. In summer there is a free shuttle service to get to the center. In 1996 the market was awarded the "marché d'exception" award for its atmosphere, durability and originality.
